Bulletproof Coffee - A Fat Burning Start to Your Morning
May 26, 2023
Coffee is my healthy addiction and I don’t feel bad about that. This bulletproof coffee recipe is my daily go to.
I love the ritual around drinking it:
1. The creation
2. The aroma and burst of flavor as the frothy goodness hits my lips
3. The mental clarity and creative spark it ignites
Morning coffee time is when I gather my thoughts before the chaos of the world begins. It’s a date with myself to reflect, discover, and meditate. This has become a part of my life’s routine and I need the tonic I’m ingesting to be liquid gold to my health. I get asked often: “isn’t coffee bad for you?” To which I respond: “bad coffee is bad for you.”
Coffee should not just taste good. It should contain beautiful antioxidants that are carried across your blood brain barrier by caffeine to help protect the body from disease. Coffee is full of polyphenols and anti-inflammatory compounds like kahweol and cafestol. The caffeine also keeps you alert, boosts your metabolism, and helps you burn fat for energy.
These benefits can only appear if you use high-quality ingredients, all these benefits are lost when you whip into the local Starbucks for their latest unicorn crapachino.
Just like the food you put into your body, the quality of your coffee matters: coffee is the second most highly pesticide-sprayed crop in the world. Non-organic coffee can drain your energy and hurt your performance, most often causing crazy jitters followed by a crash or a throbbing headache.
Don’t put garbage into your body and expect magical results.
- Collagen
- Sprinkle of Sea Salt
- MCT
- Grass-fed butter or ghee
The best part of this healthy bulletproof coffee recipe is the constant fat burn. If your body is low on energy stores and you are fat adapted, your own natural metabolic systems can tap into the buffet on the body (burn the fat you already have). You become leaner without having to work at it.
Butter Benefits
Grass-fed butter gives the creamy consistency. It is a good source of butyrate and contains important nutrients like vitamin A, beta-carotene, and the fatty acid CLA.
The saturated fat and cholesterol in the grass-fed butter support your hormones (all steroid and sex hormones, including fat-burning testosterone, come from cholesterol).
Butter contains the metabolism-boosting fatty acid butyrate. It improves insulin sensitivity, reduces cholesterol and blood sugar, and greatly increases fat burning and mitochondrial activity.
Why MCT?
High-quality MCT oil turns into ketones within minutes for instant energy, endurance, fat metabolism, satiety and brain function.
Isn’t coconut oil the same as MCT?
NO
C12 (Lauric acid) is what you’ll mostly find in coconut oil, but your body doesn’t treat it like an MCT. Rather than immediately getting converted into energy, lauric acid requires a pit stop in the liver. This is why it is more accurately described as a long-chain triglyceride (LCT), not an MCT.
With MCT oils, you want pure, 100% expeller-pressed C8 (caprylic acid), oil sourced completely from coconuts with no added unnecessary chemicals. Some cheaper MCTs are sourced from palm oil which is not good for environment.
Optional Additions
L-Theanine – It has been shown to mitigate negative effects from caffeine, including impaired sleep quality and anxiety, while boosting the positive effects
Ceylon Cinnamon – helps balance blood sugar
Turmeric – anti inflammatory
Vanilla – antioxidant, antidepressant
Cayenne – thermogenic compound, increased metabolism
Cacao Butter – full of essential fatty acids and antioxidants
Collagen Protein – heat stable protein source that’s high in the amino acid glycine. It supports healthy tissue repair while revitalizing your skin.
Sea Salt – contains minerals and trace minerals that help provide Adrenal support and energy production
What NOT to ADD:
1. Whey Protein
Whey is not heat-stable and the IGG peptides can get damaged by the high temperature of your coffee. (You can add it into iced coffee)
2. Soy Milk
Soy is high in phytic acid and lectins, and it may affect estrogen levels if eaten in excess
3. Sugar and Artificial Sweetness
If you like your coffee on the sweet side, use Stevia, xylitol, honey, or monk fruit.
4. Conventional Creamer – full of hydrogenated oils, artificial flavors & sweeteners, thickeners – toxic and not to ever consume
